The Importance of Family and Consumer SCiences

There are many reasons why Family and Consumer Science education is so important. The skills you learn in these classes are skills you will always be able to use no matter what you do after high school. These skills include cooking, nutrition, child development, business exploration, sewing, interior decorating, personal finance, and communication skills.

Our consumer sciences classes are not required, but there is so much that you can take away from them. These classes are great for everyone, and many different people take them. You are very likely to get to know new people and maybe even become friends with people that you have never talked to before. Also, these classes are fun! They are a great way to get a break in your day, and yet still be getting credit because you are still learning!

Many people may think that these classes are not as important as maybe the core classes, but they are! Whether you realize it or not, you are actually taking the skills from English, Math, and Science and applying them to real life skills.

Someday you are most likely going to move out of your parent's house, and without the knowledge taught in Family and Consumer Sciences you will be missing out on a lot of basic life skills. These classes are actually essential for being successful in the future. No one is born knowing how to cook, sew, manage a budget, raise a child, or handle family problems. It needs to be learned. Our FACS Education program is run by Mrs. Rotering, and she is great with helping any student at any skill level. She makes sure that everyone is gaining the knowledge they need to be successful.

Another learning opportunity that G-E-T has in the Family and Consumer Sciences is joining FCCLA. Our chapter is growing every year, and was actually the third largest chapter in the state last year. FCCLA is a lot of fun, and you can be as involved as you want to be. You are sure to make friends! I would encourage everyone to come to a meeting, and join FCCLA!

At G-E-T we offer 16 different classes in the Family and Consumer Sciences.
